Abstract landscapes that explore our deep connections with the natural world.

Alicja is an artist who is responding to a sense of atmosphere and play of light across the landscape with her expressive oil paintings. Capturing those moments of delight at the way the light dances across the landscape. The combination of the large gestural marks and bold use of colour leads you on a journey into the landscape whilst still exploring the nature of the medium. Handling the paint, the selection and laying it on, a cumulation of single marks which coalesce into a whole.

Alicja Gear | Artist

An important part of my painting of these landscapes is recognising our duty of care as humans. We are the ones who need to restore this earth to a sustainable level. This message is not overt but by painting aesthetically perhaps others may feel some of what I feel towards our Earth and Mother and take a little more care.

Working in Series

Alicja often works within a series, starting with a reference point. She then works to capture the essence of the landscape and the feelings it engenders in her, particularly the way the light affects the environment. “Working within a series becomes a cohesive story for me as the artist on a journey and hopefully also for the viewer. It also provides a framework to my focus attention.”

Farm Series

This body of work is a translation of my emotional response to that particular landscape. Visually I’m captured by the changing light and atmosphere over the hills and through the trees, but there is also a calm quality to this particular area I’m drawn to. I feel good when I walk this track and hills in a way that is unique to this spot. It may be just that it draws on my memories as a child of the property I grew up on. I remember lying in bed looking through the window watching the Manuka sway and wondering how someone could possibly paint it, it’s a little surreal to be back at that point, looking at the trees and wondering how I can paint them.

Essence of the Land

On one level I’m looking to portray the essence of the landscape, our Mother, with aesthetic qualities in order to derive that positive emotional response we experience when we engage with something of beauty. As an intuitive I use colour to build on the emotional qualities I feel within these environments and portray the play of light across the scene. This particular series has derived from the Pauatahanui inlet providing a framework to focus on.

The Escarpment Track

The concept for this work was inspired by a grove of trees on the escarpment track between Pukerua Bay and Paekakariki. After walking along the exposed cliffs you enter this cool dark enclosed space where densely packed trees reach for the sun. These works are an impression of that sunlight shinning down upon me through the reaching branches. This series has been painted on large unstretched canvases, almost mural-like, which allow for full body movement to create beautiful gestural marks.
